“A beautiful, meditative and immediately accessible score”
Denby Richards, Musical Opinion
The composer and vocalist Jenni Roditi's CD of her choral work Devotion that Moves the Heart is now available to buy from this site.
The two-movement work, which is scored for eight voices and keyboard, was first premiered in 1997. The text has been taken from a translation of the original Tibetan prayer by Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche, a brilliant scholar of nineteenth century Tibet. Dubbed the “Tibetan Leonardo” because of his significant contributions to religion, education, medicine and politics, he was the quintessence of the great intellectual and contemplative traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.
While Devotion that Moves the Heart is written in a conventional choral style, Jenni Roditi often employs vocal techniques from other cultures, exploiting the voice’s potential to its limits in both her writing and her singing. She herself is also known as a particularly versatile and expressive singer.
Jenni has completed a course in North Indian Khyal style singing and a study trip to Bali to learn more about the healing properties of crystal sound, Gamelan music and the ancient art of Balinese Temple singing.
