Classical Composing

Piano Reality 1 1976-7
Piano Reality 2 1978-9

My composing began when I was six, with songs. By the time I was 15 I felt the song form no longer encompassed the whole of what I wanted to say - I moved to the piano to write these two pieces. At first called 'fantasies' I decided to rename them in later years as they reflect much of the real me at the time. They were recorded at Saga Studios, (my Dad's company) in Hampstead, London.

September Boxes - 1985 Guildhall Chamber Orchestra. Conductor Lionel Friend. Performed at the Guildhall School of Music.

This was my final year big undergraduate project. I got my first professional review from Keith Potter of Classical Music magazine with this piece. He said "by far the best piece. A brittle, occasionally even brash, somewhat Varesian work, full of panache, but also a fine sense of how to handle such drama in orchestral terms."

It's called September Boxes because I created the ideas for the piece by making musical graphic doodles in a series of different shaped and sized boxes, on a sheet of paper.
